Read In Peace (no, seriously)

It’s time. I can finally say “I’ve read every good LitRPG” with minimal chance of being waylaid by another bookworm for my ignorance. I’ve buried books, worshiped others, and sacrificed a handful for sanity’s sake. All so I could write this article for your consumption.

Kidding. I did it because I’m a bookworm too.

Without further ado, here are the best LitRPG’s of all time in no particular order.

The Land by Aleron Kong

Fantasy, City-Building, Adventure

Source: The Land website

The LitRPG series I return to again and again. Maybe it’s the city-building elements that do it for me. It’s inspiring watching the Mist Village weather storm after storm. Though the characters lack in many aspects, the detailed world-building is so delicious that it’s inspired an entire online roleplaying community on Facebook.

The Good: Rich world-building, a strong plot, an ambitious MC.

The Ugly: Paper-thin side characters, liberal profanity, potty-joke humor, a slow first couple chapters.

Whether or not you believe that Aleron Kong is the Father of American LitRPG’s, this series is worth checking out. It’s also worth noting the MC isn’t Caucasian, and fantasy races are loosely based on real-life ethnicities.

The Gam3 by Cosmo Yap

Sci-Fi, Action, Adventure

Source: Amazon

A roller-coaster of a read. Get ready for non-stop action and status screens galore. Think of this as the Sci-Fi version of The Land. Both series paint fantastic settings that transport you to imaginative lands, and both series struggle to field strong characters. The Gam3 opens with a classic entering-a-game montage (it’s quick and painless) and closes with hard-hitting questions that haunt your daydreams for weeks.

The Good: Incredibly rich worldbuilding, a layered plot, memorable side-characters.

The Ugly: Reactive MC who relies a lot on his AI, slightly overcrowded stat screens.

If you like status screens, massive worldbuilding, and stories that linger in your brain-space, give The Gam3 series a try.

The Scourged Earth by Mirrored

Post-Apocalyptic, Action, Sci-Fi

Source: Royalroadl

A web-novel that rivals mainstream titles in both quality and quantity. At over 1000 pages in content, The Scourged Earth delivers an addictive taste of a world crippled by alien scourges hungry for Earth’s resources. The story begins by introducing the MC to a familiar zombie-like scourge, the Gray Legion, and ramping it up from there. Be prepared to be immersed in a planet infested by infectious Spore Tyrants and reality-bending Feral Artisans in The Scourged Earth.

The Good: Tough-as-Nails characters, intense action, and truly unique extraterrestrials.

The Ugly: Minor grammatical errors, incomplete series (author on hiatus).

If you enjoy immersive action, gritty characters, unique aliens, and a semi-plausible System, check out The Scourged Earth series.

There you have it! The best LitRPG’s of all time. Don’t believe me? Give one a try. If I’ve missed any incredible series, link them in the comments below and I’ll be sure to check them out.
